Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle with a classic three stone engagement ring. The royal engagement was officially announced last Monday. The couple have been dating for 16 months.
Later in the week the wedding date also became official. The royal wedding will take place in Windsor Castle this coming May.
Meghan's brand new diamond engagement ring
Meghan’s new sparkler features a centre stone that appears to be a cushion cut diamond. Its size is likely to be around 2.5ct. The centre diamond sits in between two smaller round diamonds.
The diamonds are traditionally set in the ring by fine claws in white gold. In contrast, the band of the engagement ring is yellow gold. This metal combination is very common in yellow diamond rings. This is due to the fact that white metal brings out the whiteness in diamonds.
The making of this royal three stone engagement ring
In the interview given to the media, the royal couple confirmed that Prince Harry designed the engagement ring.
He chose to source the centre diamond from Botswana. The couple travelled there this summer to celebrate Meghan’s 36th birthday.
The two round diamonds on the side of the centre stone come from Princess Diana’s jewellery collection. This is the second time that Diana’s jewellery features in, or as part of, engagement rings chosen by her sons. In November of 2010, Prince William proposed to Princess Kate with his late mother’s blue sapphire and diamond ring.
Prince Harry commissioned Cleave and Company to manufacture the three stone engagement ring for his fiancée. Cleave’s established association with the royal household goes back to over a decade.
